Located in Syracuse, NY the Subterranean Theater resides mostly below ground level. Its structure is dug into the ground and connects to the site’s original landscape, similar to my precedent study on Peter Zumthor’s Zinc Mine Museums. One of my goals in this project was to preserve the site’s usability. Instead of the building being the main focal point, the theater is sensibly pushed into the ground, allowing people to engage with the environment in the same way.
The roof is raised 7 inches above the ground on a 5-degree slope inviting visitors to interact with the green roof. The interior includes a ticketing area/lobby, auditorium, green room, restrooms, small office, and storage space.
