Located in Gowanus, Brooklyn, Community Center 01 aims at bringing private green space to the public. The design was guided by the surrounding environment where brownstones have private front yards and courtyards, even on atypical sites where green space was negotiated into the site, pictured below.
The community center brings this to the community through its 20,000-square-foot lot of green space on the 38,000-square-foot site. There are additional spaces for public use, including a pool, cafe, open-air hallways, and additional lounging space in the cafe area.

There is no hierarchy spatially, so visitors can move throughout the community center based on where they would like to go (cafe, pool, green space, greenhouse, lounge area).
